Candle Care

FOR YOUR SAFETY, AND TO ENSURE YOU HAVE A LONG LASTING, FULL FRAGRANCED SOY CANDLE, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING IMPORTANT INFORMATION. FAILURE TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN FIRE HAZARD OR INJURY.

SAFETY

As with any product involving an open flame, there are many common sense factors to consider, such as 'keep out of reach of children'. We are going to discuss other issues outside of these, which you may not have thought could be cause for concern.

1. ALWAYS place on a heat-proof, even surface.

2. ALWAYS trim the wick before relighting.

3. ALWAYS place out of drafts or vibrations.

4. NEVER burn for more than 4 hours continuously.

5. NEVER leave a candle unattended.

6. NEVER blow out.

7. NEVER pick up a hot candle.

TRIM THE WICK

Soy wax does not burn as hot as paraffin wax, so soy wax candles require a thicker wick, which does not burn 100% and needs to be trimmed regularly. We use 100% cotton, lead free wicks. ALWAYS trim your wick to about 6-8mm before you re-light your candle. Sometimes you will notice a ‘mushrooming’ of the wick. To provide the cleanest burn possible, we recommend you remove the black ‘mushroom’ before burning and periodically during the burn. This will ensure a long lasting candle, minimise soot and black residue. If this happens, extinguish your candle, wait for it to cool, wipe off the carbon marks with a clean damp cloth and re-light. Be sure not to over trim your wick as you may not be able to re-light your candle. Always keep the wax pool free from foreign objects such as wick trimmings, wick particles, match debris and dust. Failure to do this could lead to a “Wax Pool Fire” where the surface of the candle may seem to be alight. In the event of this occurring, use care to extinguish the flame, we recommend using a fire blanket or fire extinguisher. The candle should not be moved or touched while the wax is alight.

LEAVE 1 CM OF WAX

Towards the end of your candle's life, please leave around 1 cm of wax at the bottom to finish. Please do not let the wick continue to burn once the wax has almost evaporated, as there is simply not enough wax to absorb the heat below this level. Discard the candle at this point and do not relight. This can cause your flame to heat the glass directly, which could, in turn, cause the glass to smash. NEVER leave an open flame unattended. Due to their hand-made nature, wicks may sometimes not be 100% centred. Candles should never be left to continuously burn for over 4 hours.

DO NOT BLOW OUT

We recommend using a candle snuffer or extinguishing your candle by dipping the wick into the melted wax and straightening. This will stop the wick smoking and will help with re-lighting the next time. Do not blow out as hot liquid wax may splash and the wick could continue to glow and emit smoke.

CHECK GLASS

It is important, before lighting a candle, to check the glass container for any hairline cracks which could have been incurred in transit. The heat from the wax could cause vulnerable glass to further crack. DO NOT use if glass is cracked, chipped or broken.

TEALIGHTS

Coco Daydream scented tealights are NOT designed for use in an oil burner, or any other confined space. They are a decorative, stand-alone candle. Our plastic tealight cups are made from the highest grade of heat resistant polycarbonate plastic, however improper use or placement may cause the plastic to melt from extreme heat.

CREATE A BURN MEMORY

When lighting a soy candle for the first time, allow the wax to melt all the way to the sides of the container. The first burn of the candle should last as long as it takes to reach all the way to the edges of the container. This will give you maximum fragrance and an even burn. If you do not allow the wax to pool on the first burn you may get wax remaining along the sides of your container.

APPEARANCE

Please remember our candles are hand poured, not mass produced. Although all effort is made to ensure consistency, every candle will be different. When using completely natural soy wax, sometimes you may notice darker patches or wet spots in your container candles. This is not a fault, simply a small blemish where the wax has not adhered to the glass 100%. This does not effect the candle in any way. The top of your candle may also appear slightly uneven; this is also a sign of natural soy wax being hand poured. Do not leave your candle in direct sunlight as it may turn a nasty yellow colour. It will not affect the candle in any way; it just loses its creamy white colour.
